Become the Master of Your Emotions

Hasn't it been a roller coaster of emotions the past few weeks?  Chances are the political and economic frenzies occurring as of late have played havoc with your emotions and your well-being.  Are you finding that there is a greater tendency to gravitate towards the negative emotions and place the positive ones on the back burner?

Your mental attitude takes a big dip when you become wrapped around your negative emotions and are unable to find a way out.  This attitude will permeate all that you do, and will seep into your relationships, your work environment, your play time, and yes, your physical well-being.

When you allow yourself to dwell in negative emotions such as fear, hatred, and anger you will move towards more of the same.  Furthermore, you will actually move away from that which you want in your life.  When you dwell in positive emotions such as hope, faith, and optimism you will move towards more of that positivism and attract well-being.

Yet you struggle often in keeping your emotions in check. That positive mental attitude eludes you and you get stuck in the downward spiral.  We've all been there.   There is no way out, you tell yourself. The good news is that there is. In order to get there, you must choose to take control of your mind.

"You must always be alert to the emotions which are present there, and embrace or reject them on the basis of their contribution to your mental attitude.  Optimism will increase your confidence and flexibility; hatred will undermine your tolerance and keen sense of justice.  If you do not take this control, you are condemning yourself to an entire life buffeted by the winds of emotional whim," said Napoleon Hill.

Look at emotions as energy and become aware of how you are using that energy. Take control of your mind and ask yourself:  Am I choosing to use this energy as positive fuel or allowing it to drain me? Negative emotions can devastate you or they can be turned around to fuel the changes you want to make in your life.  Positive emotions will add more fuel to those changes.

Become the master of your emotions and be responsible for your mental attitude. Your well-being will thank you.

P.S.  I am choosing to master my emotions these days by doing three things.  Number one, I'm turning off the radio and TV 24-7 so that I don't get sucked into more media frenzy.  I can still be aware of the news without it taking over every waking thought.  Two, I'm counting my blessings as to what I do have in my life.  And third, I am focusing on what I can control and change in my life, not what I can't.

"If I feel depressed, I will sing.

If I feel sad, I will laugh.

If I feel ill, I will double my labor.

If I feel fear, I will plunge ahead.

If I feel poverty, I will think of wealth to come.

If I feel incompetent, I will remember past success.

If I feel insignificant, I will remember my goals.

Today I will be the master of my emotions."

            Og Mandino

"Let's not forget that the little emotions are the great captains of our lives and we obey them without realizing it."

            Vincent Van Gogh

"Feelings are much like waves.  We can't stop them from coming but we can choose which one to surf."

            Jonatan Martensson

"Take control of your consistent emotions and begin to consciously and deliberately reshape your daily experience of life."

            Anthony Robbins

It's a good thing I am going out of town for a week because it will be easier for me to turn away from the TV and radio. John and I will be at the American Dental Association meeting inSan Antonio,Texas.  Friday evening, October 17, I will be installed as the 2009 President of the American Association of Women Dentists.  My children will be flying in to spend the weekend and will share this special evening with us.

I've been a member of AAWD for thirty years and it is an honor for me to lead the organization into the next years.  AAWD always has, and always will, hold a special place in my heart.

The Balance Beam will return on October 28.  Until then,

Have a fantastic couple weeks and become the master of your emotions.

Stephanie
