Inside Secrets From The Football Huddle

The Super Bowl buzz has kicked into full gear.  Numerous questions need answered.  Which commercial will be the best and how much did it cost?  Will the Go Daddy girl be back?  Who's performing at half-time?  What's on the menu for the Super Bowl party?  Who has the heads up - the Colts or the Bears?

What are the coaches telling their players?  I've got the inside secrets from former great football coaches.  Gather round the huddle.

Secret #1 by Vince Lombardi: "A man can be as great as he wants to be. If you believe in yourself and have the courage, the determination, the dedication, the competitive drive and if you are willing to sacrifice the little things in life and pay the price for the things that are worthwhile, it can be done."

Not much is handed to you on a silver platter.  You have to go after it.  Start with a positive attitude, incorporate the traits above, and give it your all.

Secret #2 by Lou Holtz: "If you don't make a total commitment to whatever you're doing, then you start looking to bail out the first time the boat starts leaking. It's tough enough getting that boat to shore with everybody rowing, let alone when a guy stands up and starts putting his jacket on."

When you are committed to your goal you are willing to go full speed ahead and just do it.  You do not make excuses or exceptions to your cause.  You are focused on the prize, whatever that may be.  Likewise, your team is also.  One person bailing affects the outcome for the entire team.

Secret #3 by Vince Lombardi:  "Individual commitment to a group effort -- that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work."

A team is only successful when each individual buys into the vision and works towards the common good of the group.

Secret #4 by Lou Holtz: "All winning teams are goal-oriented. Teams like these win consistently because everyone connected with them concentrates on specific objectives. They go about their business with blinders on; nothing will distract them from achieving their aims."

It's all about focus.  Each person performs to the best of their ability, knows their goals and those of the team, and gets the job done.

Secret #5 by Don Shula: "I don't know any other way to lead but by example."

Your team, your children, your co-workers, and your friends, amongst others, are watching you.  What example are you leaving behind?

Secret #6 by Vince Lombardi: "If you aren't fired with enthusiasm, you will be fired with enthusiasm."

Ignite your passion in whatever you do.  Energy and enthusiasm will take you far.

Secret #7 by Vince Lombardi: "Teams do not go physically flat, they go mentally stale."

Follow the CANI principle - constant and never ending improvement.

By extrapolating these secrets into your personal and professional life you will cross the goal line with greater ease.  Let the game begin!

Are you searching for a great dip for your Super Bowl party?  I got this recipe from my friend Barb in Kansas City and it has been a hit for years.  Enjoy!

            Cheesy Bean Dip

1 8oz. cream cheese, softened

1 8oz. carton sour cream

1 can (1 lb.) refried beans

½ package enchilada mix (similar to the taco mix in the envelope)

20 drops hot sauce

4 oz. Cheddar cheese, grated

4 oz. Monterey Jack cheese, grated

Mix together cream cheese, sour cream, beans, enchilada mix, and hot sauce.  Spread in two 8 inch round pie pans or one 13X9 inch pan (spray the pans first).  Cover with the grated cheeses.  Bake 15-20 minutes at 350 degrees or until hot and bubbly.

Serve with tortilla chips.  Serves 8-12 (maybe).

I'm not much of a football fan, but I do agree with the coaching advice given by these winning coaches.  Their words of wisdom made it possible for their teams to achieve greatness just as their message can enable you and me to cross the goal line in our endeavors.  It's easy for me to give up when the going gets tough, but continuing to focus on the "goal" gives me the drive to hang in there.  Determination, perseverance, courage, focus, and commitment are all attributes I continue to nurture.

Furthermore, passion and enthusiasm must be present in all that I do.  If not, then it's time to get real and ask myself if this is what I really want to be putting my energy into.  What happens when a football team becomes lackadaisical?  They lose games and fan support diminishes.  Their score reflects a zero.  It's the same with life when the sparkle is gone.

So I'll be watching the big game to see who has the sparkle this year.  Pass the chips and dip please!

Have a fantastic week and gather round the huddle.

Stephanie
