The Extra Mile is on the Road to Riches

"One of the most important principles of success is developing the habit of going the extra mile," said Napoleon Hill in his book, Keys to Success.  Which mile on which road do you take?

Hill developed this simple formula to help get you there:

Q1 + Q2 + MA = C

Q1 is the quality of service rendered.

Q2 is the quantity of service rendered.

MA is the mental attitude in which it is rendered.

C is your compensation.

Hill's idea of compensation is not exclusive to money.  It means also: "joy, harmony with others, spiritual enlightenment, faith, an open mind, a sense of tolerance, or anything else worthwhile that you seek."

Apply the formula to your professional life and answer these questions of you and your employees (if you have them):   What is the quality of your service?  Do you strive to be 5-star or are you satisfied being 1-star?  What value do you offer your clients, patients, or customers?  In addition, is the quality you offer a one-shot deal, or is it ongoing?  And, is it offered with a positive attitude or unenthusiastically? Your customers know, you know.

Imagine going the extra mile with your family and social network, and with your fellow man.   Take time to listen, appreciate, and seek first to understand others.  Do not be quick to judge or criticize. The pleasure you will receive is proportional to the effort placed in Q1, Q2, and MA.  Remember, as you sow, so shall you reap, so reap abundance by going above and beyond.

While you're at it, go the extra mile for yourself.  What else could you accomplish if you pushed yourself just a bit more, stayed with a difficult project a tad longer, accepted a job assignment which you knew would be a stretch, or took two steps, instead of one, on the way to your dreams?

Low scores in quality, quantity, and mental attitude will dock your compensation.  Don't let that happen to you.  High compensation in your business world goes hand in hand with high compensation in your personal life when you get in the habit of going the extra mile.

Get on the road and go the extra mile - it's a key to success!

"No one ever attains very eminent success by simply doing what is required of him; it is the amount and excellence of what is over and above the required that determines the greatness of ultimate distinction."

            Charles Francis Adams

"Do more than is required.  What is the distance between someone who achieves their goals consistently and those who spend their lives and careers merely following?  The extra mile."

            Gary Ryan Blair

"There are no traffic jams along the extra mile."

            Roger Staubach

"You can start right where you stand and apply the habit of going the extra mile by rendering more service and better service than you are now being paid for."

            Napoleon Hill

Some people believe that going the extra mile is too time-consuming or too difficult.  Perhaps they feel it is just not worth it.  Who's paying attention, anyway?  Ah, lots of people are, and they are keeping score.  They will return to your place of business, buy from you, develop relationships with you, and walk beside you on the road to riches when the compensation is high.

Furthermore, you know deep inside when you are not going the extra mile for yourself. I am no exception.  Disappointment sets in when I don't give my all.  I know I could have done more, but for whatever reason (usually excuses) I come up short.  When that happens I vow to make changes next time.

I want to be the one who goes the extra mile and makes a difference.  I don't want to be the one who does just enough to get by.

Have a fantastic week and go the extra mile.

Stephanie
