If You Want a Thing Bad Enough...

The Master Formula of Attainment as set forth in Robert Collier's book The Secret of the Ages says:  "You may have anything you want, provided that you (1) know exactly what you want, (2) want it hard enough, (3) confidently expect to attain it, (4) persistently determine to obtain it, and (5) are willing to pay the price of its attainment."

This formula, if you choose to follow it, will guide you to achieve personal and professional success.  Collier's son, Gordon, said that "surveys show that only 10% of the people really want and seek and study for Success.  The other 90% only have excuses for their lack of ambition and pure laziness."

Be one of the 10%.

(1)               Know exactly what you want.  Sounds simple, yet in reality you can easily remain wishy-washy.  You want this, but you also want that, or maybe you want what your neighbor or friend wants.  Perhaps your goal is really the goal your parents or your spouse have for you and it's not really YOUR goal.  What is it YOU want?  Write it down, draw a picture of it, tell ten people, focus on your want.  "Before you can win your heart's desire, you must get clearly fixed in your mind's eye what it is that you want," Collier said.

(2)               Want it hard enough.  You must have desire moving you forward in action.  Furthermore, this desire must be intense, and not that of a wishing and hoping kind.  Collier likened this desire to "the persistent, insistent, ardent, overwhelming desire of the drowning man for a breath of air; of the shipwrecked or desert-lost man for a drink of water; of the famished man for bread and meat..."

(3)               Confidently expect to attain it.  Stop your excuses for why you don't have what you want. A positive mental attitude is paramount if you want a thing bad enough, so brush your fears aside and go forth with enthusiasm, confidence, and energy.  You must believe in your abilities.  "So tonight, just before you drop off to sleep, concentrate your thought on this thing that you most desire from life.  BELIEVE that you have it.  SEE YOURSELF possessing it.  FEEL yourself using it.  Do that every night until you ACTUALLY DO BELIEVE that you have the thing you want.  When you reach that point, YOU WILL HAVE IT!"  (Collier)

(4)               Persistently determine to obtain it.  Are you ready to quit at the first inkling of strife?  Do not be so quick to throw in the towel if you want a thing bad enough.  Collier said "the Law of Averages will favor the man who persists.  All of us have bad luck and good luck.  The man who persists through the bad luck - who keeps right on going - is the man who is there when the good luck comes - and is ready to receive it."  Be there because the thing you want bad enough is just around the corner.

(5)               Are willing to pay the price of its attainment.  Life usually does not hand you what you want on a silver platter; you have to go out and work for it.  College and four years of dental school will get you a dental degree.  Continuing education and advanced training will get you even further if you are willing to pay the price. If you want a thing bad enough you will do whatever it takes to have it.  No debate.

The Master Formula of Attainment will make you the master of your life.  All you have to do is follow the formula and you will have what you want bad enough.

"If you want a thing bad enough

To go out and fight for it,

Work day and night for it,

Give up your time and your peace and your sleep for it,

If only desire of it

Makes you quite mad enough

Never to tire of it,

Makes you hold all other things tawdry and cheap for it,

If life seems all empty and useless without it

And all that you scheme and you dream is about it,

If gladly you'll sweat for it,

Fret for it,

Plan for it,

Lose all your terror of God or man for it,

If you'll simply go after that thing that you want,

With all your capacity,

Strength and sagacity,

Faith, hope and confidence, stern pertinacity,

If neither cold poverty, famished and gaunt,

Nor sickness nor pain

Of body or brain

Can turn you away from the thing that you want,

If dogged and grim you besiege and beset it,

                        You'll get it!"

Walter Hailey of Dental Boot Kamp fame gave me a copy of The Secret of the Ages many years ago.  Every time I get it out of the bookcase I am reminded of its message and its power, so it's time to read it again.  When I work it and believe in it, that thing I want appears. There is no denying that the master formula of attainment is masterful.

I introduced you to Paul Potts last week, the Englishman whose dream was to sing opera.  He did win theBritain's Got Talent competition and will sing before the Queen and cut a CD.  He got what he wanted bad enough.  See his winning performance here:

Dentists, if you want a more committed team bad enough, read my latestMentor's Mind column in the Woman Dentist Journal:
