Life's Playground

Forest Gump's mama told him that "life was like a box of chocolates.  You never know what you're gonna get."  It's the same with the playground of life; you never know which playground equipment you'll find yourself on at any given time.  Whichever piece it is, though, you'll find that the playground can teach you much about life.

What's in your playground?

1.      SEASAW.  You can be the heavyweight in life, control others and situations, and never give up the bottom seat of the seesaw.  Does that describe you?  On the other hand, total lack of control is felt when you are at the top of the seesaw and the other person (or circumstance) won't budge a bit.  You keep bouncing up and down, trying to get yourself back down but nothing happens.  You're stuck.  Life can do that to you sometimes.  Eventually, you do find a way back down, and become the controller of your life again, but then the pendulum swings and you've lost control again.  Have you ever noticed, though, how well balanced two can be on a seesaw?  This give and take creates harmony in your life.

2.      MERRY-GO-ROUND.  How many times have you found yourself going around in circles?  You've lost your way and are spinning your wheels.  You can go so fast that you get dizzy. No vision, no goals, no accountability.  Not a great way to be living your life, is it?  Of course, someone or something is the force behind the merry-go-round.   Maybe it's you.  It's up to you to face the force and make the necessary changes to stop the merry-go-round.

3.      SLIDE.  You set your goals, step up the stairs one by one, and then find yourself on top of the world.  You made it!  Ever try to walk or run UP the slide?  Now, that's fun.  Sometimes you make it and sometimes you don't.  That's life.   Just don't give up too easily.  When you do reach the top, enjoy the view, and pat yourself on the back for your accomplishments.  Eventually you'll slide back down, ready to take on new goals.

4.      MONKEY BARS.  Here, you're moving about from one rung to another, climbing in and out, falling through the "cracks", or climbing to the top. Many monkey bars take strength to go the distance and you've got to get a firm grip or you can slip and/or fall.  Brush yourself off and try again until you make it.  Do remember to treat yourself with down time on your journey through life and "monkey around".

5.      SWING.  What needs to happen to light the fire in you?  Give yourself the push you need and off you go!  Or, have someone (mentor, friend, spouse, coach) give you a kick start.  Either way, keep the momentum and go for it.  Soar with the eagles.

No matter where you are in life's playground, know that the BALANCE BEAM can be your "home".  You won't always be on it, but when you are, life just clicks.

"You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation."

            Plato

"It is a happy talent to know how to play."

 Ralph Waldo Emerson

"If you aren't playing well, the game isn't as much fun. When that happens I tell myself just to go out and play as I did when I was a kid."

            Thomas J. Watson

"Man is most nearly himself when he achieves the seriousness of a child at play."

            Heraclitus

Oak Knoll Park was one block from my childhood home and I spent many hours playing there with the neighborhood kids. It had a large playground and there was sand beneath my feet to cushion my falls.  I was the queen of the mountain on top of the slide, a dizzy dean on the merry-go-round, and a swinging monkey on the jungle gym.  The park brings back so many childhood memories. I was just playing then, little did I know of life's lessons I was learning.

It was a weekend for childhood memories as John and I traveled to Kansas City to visit his friend Tom and wife Barb.  John and Tom were next door neighbors growing up in Jerseyville and quite the pranksters (I get the feeling that John was the instigator and Tom the follower).  The child in all of us was evident throughout the weekend and it was a wonderful recess from our daily workdays.

Have a fantastic week and keep the play in your life.

Stephanie
