What we think…

“What we think determines what we believe; what we believe influences what we choose; what we choose defines what we are; and what we are attracts what we have.”

Whew, that’s a long sentence, and it stopped me in my tracks the other day.  I had taken a book with me to the Department of Motor Vehicles so that I could settle in for the usual two hour wait (yes, that’s the governmental agency for you).  You can only people watch for so long before even that gets boring and people will accuse you of staring!  Anyway, I was reading The Five Major Pieces to the Life Puzzle by Jim Rohn and I came across this sentence and found myself reading and re-reading it.  Then I was dissecting each part of it, nodding my head in agreement.

“What we think determines what we believe; what we believe influences what we choose; what we choose defines what we are; and what we are attracts what we have.”

Let’s take a look at it piece by piece:

What we think determines what we believe.  What are you thinking? Chances are that many of your thoughts were acquired from your childhood and you find yourself still buckling under their power.   Your inner critic is speaking to you 50,000 times a day and 80% of it is negative:  “you’re fat, you’ll never amount to anything in your life, you’ll never be able to do that, you’re lazy, no one likes you”.  The more these thoughts fill your mind, the more you believe them to be true.  It’s a vicious cycle.  When you think in negative terms, you believe in negative terms.  That’s why it is imperative to replace these self-defeating thoughts with positive ones.  Imagine a TV remote in your hand and be ready to change the channel.  The second these negative thoughts pop into your mind, visually click to a new channel where your thoughts are positive.  Put this channel on speed remote.

What we believe influences what we choose.  Negative beliefs lead to negative choices.  If you believe you are fat, you will stay fat.  If you believe you will never amount to anything in life, you won’t.  You will make choices in your life that validate these beliefs.  Why seek out advanced training if you believe you can’t rise to the next level?  Why eat healthy and exercise if you believe you are destined to be fat?  You will only perpetuate your negative beliefs in the choices you make.  On the other hand, if you believe you can and that you are capable of creating the life you want, then you will choose accordingly to make that happen.  You will choose to seek out that training, choose to join that gym, and choose to be surrounded with positive people who can support you in your goals.

What we choose defines what we are.  Are your choices leading to success for you, or do they take you back to the poor old soul who will never amount to anything?  Choosing to set goals and to have a higher purpose in life will propel you forward to a life of fulfillment.  Decide what you want to be, and then make choices to get you there.  Is what you are doing in the moment leading to the positive vision you have for yourself?  Poor choices will arise in the journey, but learn from them and do not let those mistakes take you back to negative mode.

What we are attracts what we have.  A person mired in negativity will lead a life of discontent and shake their head in wonderment as to why their dreams have not come true.  It’s like they have a sign around their neck that says “negativity, here I am, come get me”.  On the other hand, a positive, upbeat, successful thinking person attracts success into their life. Picture yourself leading the life you want, act like you already are living it, and it will be yours.  The more attractive your success, the more you will have.

“What we think determines what we believe; what we believe influences what we choose; what we choose defines what we are; and what we are attracts what we have.”

Think about that, and let it soak into your pores.  There’s no denying that what you’re thinking about shapes your life.  So, what are you thinking about?  Do not become a prisoner of negative thoughts; they will keep you from reaching your full potential.

“You are today where your thoughts have brought you.  You will be tomorrow where your thoughts take you.”
     James Allen

“We become what we think about.”
     Earl Nightingale

“A man is what he thinks about all day long.”
    Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Each of us must live off the fruit of our thoughts in the future, because what you think today and tomorrow – next month and next year – will mold your life and determine your future.”
     Earl Nightingale

“Act as though it were impossible to fail.”
     Dorothea Brande

I still get the goosebumps every time I read this passage.  I remember all too well the struggles I had after I moved into my new office and how life was not working well for me.  I was mired in negativity and could not get rid of its hold on me.  Going to the office every day with a pessimistic attitude did nothing to further along the practice.  My thoughts were very destructive and no doubt had a hand in my decision to close my practice.

I’ll take positive thoughts any day now over negative ones.  I’ve learned though, that it is up to me to make that happen.  I can’t relinquish my power to my inner critic because when I do, she takes the ball and runs with it.  Then it becomes a battle to get the ball back.  That’s why this passage was so powerful for me; it’s packed with truth that I have to remember every day.  If I want to make good choices and achieve great things, then I have to have my thoughts work for me and not against me.

So, I’ll change it up a little and say “What I think determines what I believe; what I believe influences what I choose; what I choose defines what I am; and what I am attracts what I have”.

Have a great week, and think positive!

Stephanie
